Optical Interference Filters Product Information

Optical Interference Filters

Interference glass filters use the interference effect to transmit or reflect certain spectral ranges of electromagnetic radiation by applying numerous thin layers with differing refractive indices on to a substrate.

Our portfolio of optical interference filters comprises of state-of-the-art bandpass interference filters and multi-cavity filters with much steeper curves and better blocking properties in adjacent ranges. SCHOTT also offers filters with hard thin film interference glass coatings realized with reactive evaporation or reactive ion plating which do not need additional protection, and filters with soft coatings that do need additional protection from damage or humidity. Both coatings (hard and soft) are manufactured with vapor-deposition under high vacuum.

Special optical interference filters complete our portfolio, e.g. VERIL linear variable filters, and the low-fluorescening, sharp cut-on, glass-plastic laminated filters of the type KV.

Optical Interference Filters Benefits

SCHOTT Advanced Optics provides exclusive high quality interference glass coatings. Together with an experienced team of sales and application engineers, we work in close co-operation with our customers to ensure that pre-determined specifications are closely adhered to so as to achieve the most optimal customized products.

No standard filter program can possibly be expected to solve every problem satisfactorily. Filters with special properties are often required to solve specific application problems. We therefore offer strong technical support to develop custom-made optical interference filters with specific properties, such as spectral values, dimensions, special surface properties, thermal stability, increased stability against environmental influences and others. Please contact us for further information.

Optical Interference Filters Key Applications

The following list represents a small part of the range of applications which utilizes optical interference filters:
  • Analytical measurements/instruments
  • LCD projector
  • Photo finishing
  • Medical applications such as blood and urine diagnostics, immuno diagnostics and ophthalmology
  • Dentistry
  • Environmental analytics
  • Fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy
  • Semiconductor microlithography
  • Optoelectronics
  • Sensors (industry, automotive (rain sensors), safety and monitoring systems)
  • Bar code reader
  • Telecommunications

Optical Interference Filters Materials

We select the most suitable from a wide range of available evaporative materials to provide the best possible optical interference filters solution.

Almost all inorganic glasses and glass ceramics are suitable for use as substrates for interference glass filters. The choice of substrate is highly dependent on the specific requirements placed upon the finished interference filter. Examples of materials to which we can apply interference glass coatings include:
  • Optical glass
  • Borosilicate glass (BOROFLOAT® 33)
  • Optical filter glass (color filter glass)
  • Glass ceramic (such as ZERODUR® glass ceramic)
  • Technical glass

Optical Interference Filters Forms of Supply

Most of the optical interference filters are produced based on our customers' pre-determined specifications.

Optical Interference Filters Specifications

We can typically supply optical interference filters smaller than 1x1 mm to about 400 mm in diameter. Specifications listed in our Interference Filters and Special Filters catalogue apply to our standard interference filters.

Customers can also approach our sales and application engineering teams for support with regards to specifications for customized optical interference filters.

From the uncoated substrate to the finished glass interference filter, which may consist of several different individual filters, we continuously monitor both optical and non-optical properties with a wide range of high quality equipment. We select the instrumentation that is most suited for the task, in many cases after detailed consultation with the customer.
